Broadcasting (Public Service, Commercial, Digital and The Internet

In today’s session we looked at the different ways things can be broadcast whether it be public service broadcasting, commercial television, digital television or over the Internet. We discovered that public service broadcasting such as the BBC is controlled by the public and also paid for by the public, through TV licensing, its non commercial and therefore has to appeal to a wide range of people of all diversities and will have to be of high quality. Commercial television on the over hand is the opposite and is funded by advertising, TV producers will therefore have to answer to the companies funding the TV programmes this could cause an affect in the quality of programming. Later on in the session we went on to discuss how the Internet and innovations such as on demand television may affect public service broadcast suggesting “why would people pay for television, when they can get it free over the Internet” I found this topic very interesting as I think that this could affect we consume our media in the future, I believe soon public service broadcasting may no longer exist due to the internet and on demand, because this allows us to view what we went and when we want for free.
