Dooms Day (AKA The Event Day)

Well today was the day we finally had our event which we had perpared, lots of hardwork prior to this day had taken place and it was good to finally put all our efforts and Ideas into action. My role intially was to make a small edit of the photos that were taken throughout the day, so I spoke with Nathan the days photographer to let him know the types of photos that we needed.

As the edit of the pictures was to be done during 12.30 and 2.30 I had a free morning to help the guys out in the green screen, so firstly I arrived 10minutes early to ensure that I could pick up the keys to the gatehouse and bring all the green screen equipment over. Once the equipment had been carted over by me Dan and Chris we began to set the equipment up with the assistance of Ciaran.

Once the majority of the rigging was done James arrived to help put the finishing touches to setting up the equipment and also ensuring all the technical equipment was set up and put in the right place, during the time setting up I helped to set up the green screen, camera, lights and the vision mixer.

Once it was all in place the visitors began to arrive initially struggling with time, we managed to pull a decent presentation together in which I helped by describing how the weather worked at ITV and showed them a short video in which Bob Crampton explained how he uses the green screen. On the second sitting of the green screen we had lots of spare time and had to try and make the session last longer so thinking on my feet I grabbed my laptop and showed them the music video I had been working on to show them the sort of things that is possible with green screen, I gave them a talk on what I did and how I did it. Me and Ciaran then continued to talk to them about the different areas of the media industry from audio, to editing.

After all the green screen viewings were finished I had the task of putting the pictures shot by Nathan to music so me and Matt worked together to create a small piece for them to watch.

Overall it was an enjoyable day and I learned a lot on the values of thinking on your feet I was particularly pleased that I gave an off the cuff presentation as this is something im not keen on doing as I dont particularly like public speaking, so it was a good day with lots of new experiences!! Thanks to everyone that helped out!

Event Preperation

With our roles decided for the event my task is to liase with Nathan the days photographer and also Matt, my co-editor, to create a small video package for the visitors to watch at the end of the day. So firstly I arranged a meeting one Thursday afternnon where we spoke about the types of photos Nathan should try and get and also the type of music which the pictures should be edited to. So after a brief chat we decided the music should be fun and ubeat in keeping with the days theme, me and Matt decided we would go away and look at various songs and keep eachother posted on what we thought was good, after severall suggestions from each of us we decided upon a track "someday" by the strokes.

After the content of the video was decided it was time to arrange how we were going to go about doing this. I emailed Rich Wood to ask about the availability of using the middle floor on the gatehouse for the editing of the video on the day, he emailed back and said this was all ok and booked me in for the day, I then spoke with Nathan who informed me that he would be bringing his camera for the day to shoot the photos, I also chatted with Jess who said it was ok for us to use her video camera for any use of motion images if we wanted to do so, now everything was arranged it was just waiting for the day its self......

THE EVENT

Today we spoke about the event we have to hold on the 30th of April, Firstly we gathered around and spoke about the different things we could include throughout the day, firstly I suggested that we should do something where they could get involved and perhaps join in on making or creating something so I suggested perhaps doing a room where they demonstrate some stop motion.

I also said that it would have been good to have a green screen room where we can show them how it is done and also perhaps get them to do it as well. This idea seemed the best as it is something that could be set up prior to the event and easy to do on the day.

I also suggested a small video for them to watch at the end perhaps showing them some of the stop motion footage they had shot or even pictures and videos of them on the day its self.

Day 4 at the Big Bang (My Last Day)

The last day of an enjoyable week. Unfortunately they were a little quiet today so there wasn't alot of work to be done or go and see, I was scheduled to sit in with Matt who was going to be doing a track lay but due to time table changes was unable to do this. So the morning manly consited of me doing running duties. The first thing I had to do on arrival was to deliver a package to a graphics company, the rest of my morning was spent asking people if they'd like any drinks or lunch ordered.

When sat waiting with the runners there was a phone call to reception from Fred (the online editor I worked with yesterday) he asked if I was available to come up and capture the tapes for deadly 60 as he was busy, so I went up
to his offic
e and spent about an hour capturing tapes. (On my own, I was quite pleased that they had trusted me to do this alone) This was a relatively simple task to me as I have done this kind of thing before, although I did come across some minor trouble where there was an error in the time code, which was fixable by stopping the capture and rewinding the tape a bit because It had run off the end of the tape.

After lunch break I was sent to go and sit in with Pete. Pete was doing a mix for a low budget film called "end of the road" One of the troubles Pete had was he had no video to work with because the company hadn't given it to him yet, so he was going through the edit and sorting out the dialogue taking out lip smacks and also enhancing the speech with effects.
Pete was also taking out any irrelevant sound by using EQ filters so that the voices were clear and easy to hear. Whilst doing his work Pete explained how its important to ramp each piece of speech in with some atmos of the same room so that you don't end up with a hard edit.

Interview with Ben

An interview with Ben who is a dubbing editor, about what he does and how he got there...

Day 3 at Big Bang

Another good day at Big Bang today, I arrived and was thrown straight into to sit with Fred who is an Online editor. Fred was working on the same show that Ben the sound dubber had been doing, so it was interesting to see the different stages and processes of the same edit. As an online editor Fred ensures that everything is finalosed and ready for Broadcast this includes, checking to see the colour is in correct order and changing aspect ratios to match each other ready for broadcast. It is in this part of the edit where he adds the titles and some motion to the edit for example today he was working on 'Deadly 60' so when the voice over was talking about a specific animal he paused the video on the animal and used key frames to highlight it and make it more interesting. Fred was using Final Cut Pro which was good because he was able to teach me some of the key frame techniques and also a good way of enhancing title texts using 'Boris' in final cut, which is something I will be looking to use in the future. Fred also showed me how adding various layers of the same clip and adding different effects can create a good aesthetic appeal and you can create some interesting shots. As the online editor he was sending out the finalised video edit of the piece after it had been colour corrected, sound will be linked back up to the video at the BBC as Fred only works to the guide sound track. Fred also explained how the edit was an edit for a multi national show so he then had to copy all the graphics and title sequences (basically anything with text) again at the end with no text added to it so that different companies in different countries can add the text of there language in.

After a morning in the Final Cut Pro suite i spent a bit of time with the runners and my first duty was to drop off a finalised tape and DVD to the BBC, so it was important I got it there safely. I was pleased with the trust they gave me to go and do it. With not a lot going on in the afternoon my last task of the day was to pop to the bank with there spare change to cash it up and then off to sainsbury's I went to stock up on fruit and milk for the next day, after this I was aloud to go home early whooop!
